A Pint of Beer a Day Keeps the Cardiologist Away

A recent study claims that drinking a pint of beer a day may lower the risk of developing heart failure.

Drinking up to three quarters of a pint of beer a day was found to increase vitamin B6 in the blood plasma by 30 per cent. Researchers from the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute in Utrechtseweg, Holland, found that the vitamin B6 prevented the buildup of homocysteine, an amino acid metabolite known to cause cardiovascular disease. The study was done on 11 healthy men aged between 44 to 59 over a period of 12 weeks.

Let’s know how beer may help your heart:
·         It raises HDL (Good cholesterol)
·         It lowers blood pressure
·         It prevents blood clotting
·         It prevents damage caused by high LDL (bad cholesterol)

Moderate drinking, not more than 1 drink a day for woman and 2 drinks a day for men, can help people keeping cardiovascular disease at bay. Heavy drinking can put you at the risk of serious health problems such as liver disease, cancer, peptic ulcer, etc.

Recommended amount:

·     One or two drinks of beer per day for lowering the chance of developing heart disease or stroke
·         Up to four glasses per day can reduce the chance of developing heart failure
·     Three drinks per day to two drinks per week have been linked with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes in healthy men
·      Up to seven drinks per week has been associated with reducing the risk of coronary heart disease in people with type 2 diabetes

One drink is equivalent to 12 oz (ounce) of beer. 1 oz is equals = 29.57 ml.
